Congratulations to Cody Crone of Wranglerstar, our featured “On The Rise” partner for this month. You’ll see his channel and videos in the spotlight on the On The Rise homepage and the YouTube Spotlight channel today.

Cody is a YouTube partner who left his "old city life" behind to explore the great outdoors. His channel also features his family and offers laughs along the way as he gives great advice to new wranglers. From T-shirts to axes, you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for from a channel dedicated to country living. You can find out what a day in Cody’s life looks like, how you can live a sustainable lifestyle and learn all about the best tools to use.

Here are a few words from Cody:
In 2010 we made the decision to leave behind our comfortable, urban lifestyle in exchange for a primitive homestead in the rugged mountains of the Pacific Northwest. In the beginning, YouTube was a convenient way for us to share our adventure with friends and family. Never in our wildest dreams did we imagine that such a diverse and engaging community would take an interest in our channel. I've always said that the Wranglerstar channel has the best subscribers on YouTube. We are honored and humbled to have been chosen as YouTube’s “On The Rise” partner for December 2013. Thank you--we are truly blessed. We appreciate the opportunity YouTube has provided for us to live and share our modern homesteading dream.

If you’ve enjoyed this monthly blog series and are interested in learning more or participating, we encourage you to visit our On The Rise homepage. You can check out all of our past featured partners on the Featured Partners tab, or nominate a YouTube partner to be considered for the program on the Nominate tab. Feel free to submit nominations for your own channel, or for channels you follow that you think deserve more attention or could be the next YouTube sensation. We’ll continue to feature promising partners who drive YouTube watch time, have fewer than 100,000 subscribers, and produce engaging content on a regular basis.

YouTube Rewind: What you watched in 2013

A Norwegian Army Dance Troupe. An Epic Split. The Fox. And a Rap Battle with an 18th century Austrian composer.

As 2013 comes to a close, these are some of the videos, channels and moments that shaped our year. While each annual list is unpredictable (what's up, Mr. Miley Cyrus impersonator), trending videos just get bigger each year. And with 80 percent of all views on YouTube coming from outside the U.S., the global community is driving pop culture unlike ever before.

You watched The Fox more than 275 million times, making it the top trending video of 2013. You also made it a top searched Halloween costume, and you’ll maybe even read it as a children’s book. You turned out in record-setting numbers to see PSY’s post-"Gangnam Style" performance. You even made more “Harlem Shake” videos than there are people in Manhattan (1.7 million videos if you’re counting).

To celebrate all these moments, more than 60 top creators on YouTube got together and made a little video for everyone:

Announcing TED’s 2014 Ads Worth Spreading

1:00:00 PM Add Comment
What makes a good ad? In some cases, it’s a striking image. In others, a funny premise. There’s no formula, but most memorable ads all have something in common: they tell a story worth sharing.

Sharing is at the heart of the YouTube experience. From Metro Trains’ Dumb Ways to Die and TNT’s Dramatic Surprise to Chipotle combining powers with Willie Nelson, many of the most popular videos on YouTube are from brands that understand the power of great storytelling and creating content people choose to watch and share.

To recognize videos like these, YouTube is once again teaming up with TED’s Ads Worth Spreading initiative to celebrate the year’s most creative and notable ads. The award is given to the brands and agencies creating innovative ads that people can’t stop sharing.

Thirty of the most creative minds in the ad world, like those behind the videos above, along with TED speakers including Sarah Kay and Alanna Shaikh, will help find and nominate 2013’s most noteworthy ads. Winners will be announced during the annual TED conference in March 2014 (for more information, check out the full list of nomination teams and advocates).

As part of our involvement, we’ll add a viewer’s choice component to the nominated videos. We’ll rank the most popular videos based on actual YouTube views using the methodology behind our YouTube Ads Leaderboard, which publishes the most watched and shared ads on YouTube each month.

For insights into what makes an ad worth spreading, check out this article and interview video. Or just watch the playlist of last year’s winning ads. Combined, these ads have been viewed more than 140 million times on YouTube.

Turning comments into conversations that matter to you

12:00:00 PM Add Comment
Let’s say you’re enjoying Lindsey Stirling or Epic Rap Battles’ latest video and want to join in the conversation. Would you rather see comments from people you care about (including Lindsey or ERB themselves), or just whoever in the world was last to post?

We told you recently that better commenting is coming to YouTube. Starting this week, when you’re watching a video on YouTube, you’ll see comments sorted by people you care about first. If you post videos on your channel, you also have more tools to moderate welcome and unwelcome conversations. This way, YouTube comments will become conversations that matter to you.

Here’s more detail about the new YouTube comments powered by Google+:
  • Comments you care about move to the top: You’ll see posts at the top of the list from the video’s creator, popular personalities, engaged discussions about the video, and people in your Google+ Circles. You can still see the most recent comments by switching from “Top Comments” to “Newest First.”
  • Join the conversation publicly or privately: You can choose to start a conversation so that it is seen by everyone, only people in your Circles, or just your bestie. Like Gmail, replies are threaded so you can easily follow conversations.
  • Easily moderate comments: If you also post videos on your channel, you’ll have new tools to review comments before they’re posted, block certain words or save time by auto-approving comments from certain fans.
If you're like the majority of people commenting on YouTube, you’ve already connected your account to a Google+ profile or page and can start commenting now. If you haven’t connected yet, you can do it here or learn more here. Remember, you’re in control of how you're seen publicly on YouTube, whether that’s keeping your current YouTube channel name, using your own name, or creating a new one.

On Sunday, November 3, YouTube will host the first-ever YouTube Music Awards, a live-streamed event honoring the artists and songs that you have turned into hits over the past year. Lady Gaga, Eminem, and Arcade Fire will join other top artists and some of YouTube’s biggest stars including Lindsey Stirling and CDZA in performances and musical collaborations from Seoul, Moscow, London and Rio, culminating in a live event in New York City. Music-video visionary Spike Jonze will be the creative director and acclaimed actor Jason Schwartzman will host with VICE and Sunset Lane Entertainment acting as executive producers.

And we’ll need your help. In mid-October, YouTube Music Awards Nominations will be announced based on the videos that you watched and shared over the past year. We’ll then call on you to determine the songs and artists honored, by sharing the nominees across social media so the awards are judged in full view of everyone.

There will be a whole lot more music to enjoy on YouTube around the Music Awards. In the days leading up to the November 3 event, nominees will share official music videos, covers, parodies, concerts, interviews and fan videos on YouTube--so you can stay in the loop, find your faves and discover new music you didn’t even know you loved! Stay tuned for lots more info, and get ready for a nonstop week of music on YouTube.

Founded more than four years ago, the Stan Winston School of Character Arts in many ways carries on Stan’s own legacy as a contributor to some iconic films including "Jurassic Park," "Iron Man" and "Avatar." The school’s various courses, webinars and workshops are led by some of Hollywood’s best artists and technicians. And Halloween is just around the corner--if you need costume ideas, you might want to check out this Iron Man suit built by a 16-year-old!

Here are a few words from Matt and Erich:
Thank you from all of us at Stan Winston School! We're honored to have been selected as a YouTube "On the Rise" Channel and it wouldn't have been possible without the support of our awesome community of Creature FX fans. We hope this spotlight brings even more awareness to the magic behind the movies, and inspires a new generation of artists to create their own fantasy characters. Long live monster making!

We hear you: Better commenting coming to YouTube

12:00:00 PM Add Comment
Quick taste test. Let’s say you’re watching a video from Justin Timberlake. What type of video comment would be awesome to see: one from JT himself, one from people you care about who love the video...or one from just the last random person to stop by?

When it comes to the conversations happening on YouTube, recent does not necessarily mean relevant. So, comments will soon become conversations that matter to you. In the coming months, comments from people you care about will rise up where you can see them, while new tools will help video creators moderate conversations for welcome and unwelcome voices.

Starting this week, you’ll see the new YouTube comments powered by Google+ on your channel discussion tab. This update will come to comments on all videos later this year, as we bring you more ways to connect with familiar faces on YouTube. Here’s what comments will look like later this year in a sample video from SoulPancake:

Here’s more detail:

  • Comments you care about move to the top: You’ll see posts at the top of the list from the video’s creator, popular personalities, engaged discussions about the video, and people in your Google+ Circles.
  • Join the conversation publicly or privately: You can choose to start a conversation so that it is seen by everyone on YouTube and Google+, only people in your Circles or just your bestie. Like Gmail, replies are threaded so you can easily follow conversations.
  • Better ways to moderate comments: You have new tools to review comments before they’re posted, block certain words or save time by auto-approving comments from certain fans. These can help you spend less time moderating, and more time sharing videos and connecting with your fans.

If you’re not yet using a Google+ profile or page on YouTube, you can sign up here or visit here to learn more.

Beth hails from Hawaii and has been creating YouTube videos since 2006! She hopes to inspire people to cook their own meals through her fast and easy approach to cooking and baking. If you’re hungry, Beth can show you how to make the best potato soup you’ll ever eat (no really, the best!), and can help you satisfy that sweet tooth with molten butterscotch cakes. Check out her channel for other fun, family-friendly meal or craft ideas.

Here are a few words from Beth:

"I started vlogging in 2006 and as I was vlogging, I would sometimes make a craft while chatting, or take my subscribers into the kitchen with me when making dinner. About three years ago, my sister and I decided that we would open a channel focusing on fast and easy cooking, baking and crafting, sometimes mixing in a little bit of humor and island flavors. I am amazed at how many incredible people from all over the world that I get to meet on a daily basis. I am so thankful to my awesome subscribers and friends who constantly support me through all of my endeavors. You.are.the.best!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart. <3"

Ever wanted your YouTube mobile app to just keep on playing? Have your video play while you look for the next one, or put on a playlist and kick back? Now you have even more ways to watch the videos and channels you love with the latest YouTube apps for Android and for iOS.

More YouTube in your YouTube apps

With the swipe of a finger, you can watch a video at the bottom of your screen while you keep exploring. Think about it this way--you can watch a video about making the perfect fried chicken while searching for homemade salted caramel sauce recipes. You can always go back to full screen with a swipe up so you never lose your place, or swipe right or left to dismiss the video. Just try to not drop your phone in the sauce.

Play ALL the videos!!!

Want to sit back and watch all of Epic Rap Battles Season 2? You can now search and browse channels for playlists on mobile apps, and watch great collections of back-to-back videos. Finally, you and your friends can decide if Season 2 is better than Season 1.

Your connected TV can be your personal YouTube Jumbotron

The Cast button on YouTube already lets you send YouTube videos from your phone or tablet to your connected TV, like on Chromecast, Google TV, PlayStation 3 and other TVs. To make it easier to choose what to watch next, you’ll see a preview screen when your devices are connected and you select a video, with options to play the video to queue it up to watch next.

To wrap it all together we gave the updated YouTube apps a cleaner, simpler look that you’ll see in other apps from Google.

You don’t need to be in Chicago to know that this weekend’s live stream of Lollapalooza on YouTube is kind of a big deal. Starting Friday at 2:30 p.m. CST, you can catch the streaming sets from 20+ artists live from Grant Park in your living room.

From Friday’s kickoff with Icona Pop (we love it), to Nine Inch Nails’ first U.S. performance since 2009, to Steve Aoki and The Cure closing out the weekend on Sunday, it’s all on YouTube.

Based on search trends, “lollapalooza live” is already the top related search terms to Lolla, which shows that you expect to see a music event like this live on YouTube. This week Super Simple Songs reached 1 billion channel views on YouTube, joining a select group of family educational channels who have achieved that honor. During my last hibernation I dreamt of berries, honey bees, and billions of views. And this week you’ve made my dreams come true! Super Simple Songs now has more than 1 billion channel views on YouTube.

Thank you to all of the parents, teachers and families who watch our videos. Some of my favorites include “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and “Open Shut Them.”

MathMeeting is “On The Rise” this month

9:00:00 AM Add Comment
Congratulations to Chris Seber of MathMeeting, our featured On The Rise partner this July. You’ll see his channel and videos in the spotlight on the On The Rise homepage and the YouTube Spotlight channel today.

School is out for many of us in July, but that doesn’t mean you can’t brush up on the basics. With just under 200 videos on his mathematics-focused channel, Chris may just be the man to help. He’s run this YouTube channel since December 2010, posting tutorials to help mathematicians at every level expand their skill set. Whether you want a refresher on how to multiply fractions or factor trinomials, Chris has videos that can walk you through each step. He might even be able to help you solve that Rubik’s cube you’ve been working on. Math students and teachers alike will appreciate the clear visuals and steady pace that Chris has developed in these videos.

Here are a few words directly from Chris:

My passion is to help as many students AND teachers as possible in the subject of mathematics. I do this by making free videos here on YouTube ranging from basic level math through upper level calculus. I do not expect everybody to fall in love with mathematics, but I wholeheartedly believe that everybody enjoys learning when it is taught in a simple, easy-to-follow manner. My simple approach to teaching has received such positive, uplifting reactions from my audience. Your comments and votes have helped me become featured as an “On The Rise” featured partner for the month of July. This is such a humbling achievement that I am most proud of. I will continue making videos to assist you in your mathematical struggles for as long as possible. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
